Enforced encouragement

Those of you who have had to put up with the most intermittent blogging in the world will be all too familiar with the fact that I have the attention span of a gnat when it comes to focusing on writing.  Even when I haven’t written anything for over two years (apart from some puff pieces for the company newsletter and a few more for a free newspaper) I still consider myself a writer at heart, just an exceptionally lazy one.

Once I get going though, I can do it.  And so it’s in that spirit that I have signed up for this year’s Nanowrimo.  I did it before, in 2004 (I think) and found it to be one of the most inspirational, frustrating and brilliant things I have ever done.  One of the things that was lacking that time though, was the support of fellow travelers on the Nano path.  And so if anyone feels like joining me on this escapade, head over to their site and get yourself signed up.  We can gesticulate and ruminate over word counts together come November.

Last night I watched ‘The Graduate’ for the first time, and was hugely impressed by it, although my familiarity with the last half an hour was slightly unnerving, having watched Waynes World 2 so many times.  I never realized what a close parody that was, with virtual shot-for-shot recreation.  I found myself more impressed by how close that was than the ending from the original film, and had to snap out of it in order to enjoy the emotional weight of the original ending.  But very enjoyable nonetheless.

I don’t think it’s very likely that I am going to get to Leeds fest this weekend.  Couple that with the fact that it seems my other festival of choice for the year, ATP’s Nightmare Before Christmas, has nearly sold out, and it looks like another festival-less year for me.  Boo.

I watched The Graduate a couple of weeks ago for the first time in probably a decade or more. I was surprised at how much I’d forgotten of it. Devious little storyline, there, and very well done. Makes me want to dig up some other older flicks for a movie night.
