Lunchtime

One of the best things about my new job is when the one hour lunch break combines with the rather splendid weather that we’re having.  Add in a dash of open fields like the ones we have round the back of the office, and you have all the ingredients for a rather splendid lunch hour, which today has consisted of lying on the grass, listening to Queens of the Stone Age and reading the very interesting Kevin Smith book, My Boring Ass Life.

Splendid.

What is not splendid though, is the news that the new Beverly Hills Cop film, to be directed by waste of space McG and starring the now predictably horrible Eddie Murphy, is to be done as a PG.  How exactly does one make a BHC film without guns or swearing?  Is Axel Foley going to be heading to tinseltown to have a nice holiday and then actually have a nice, uneventful time drinking sangrias with Judge Reinhold?  Or perhaps form some kind of Am-Dram group for retired police officers?

Die Hard 4 was looking iffy, but they pulled it off despite the BBFC rating… PG though…

It’s safe to say we won’t be hearing the N word in this one… He’ll probably just stay at another hotel…

After seeing the PG rated SpeedRacer with tons of guns and car crashes and lots of uses of “ass” and a flip of the bird, I’m thinking that PG also just isn’t what it used to be. Not that it compared to the old BHC.

I did consider that times have changed since the 80s, but then I thought about Die Hard 4, which wasn’t nearly as violent as the first one… Which kind of killed my argument…

Is SpeedRacer good? I don’t think it’s out over here yet… But then, what do I know? I’m a god damn asshole…

It was fine. Not really my cup of tea. :) You’d have to ask Bald Man. Though I like the cartooniness of the sets. And the special effects on the races were impressive. Luke loved the race scenes. Jake was thoroughly bored from about 10 minutes on. Samantha liked it. :) I do hope you left that last bit off of your job apps. ;)

Things are definitely easier to get through now, but it’s always in a really bland way now. I mean, I still don’t think you could get anything close to the classic Murphy/Pinchot exchange over art in the first one in a PG.

I am curious about Speed Racer, but it looks like the cinematic equivalent of a sugar rush. Exciting for a brief time, but ultimately shallow and leaving you with a headache. Too many colours.

Sugar rush is probably a good comparison. I can’t say I gave it a fair shake, though, seeing as how I had a whiny four year old on my lap most of the time saying he was ready to go home. Can’t say I blamed him, though.

I’m still waiting to see when I reckon Rosie will be ready for the cinema, aint gonna do it until she’s learnt the lesson not to talk during the film.
